Vietnam: Huang Phong – Quang Tri Province

from $30.00

Traceability: Five families in Huang Phong

Species: Liberica

Process: Washed

Elevation: 1,969 ft (600 masl)

Notes: Raspberry Brownie, Lychee, Stevia

Method: Drip (1:15), Espresso, Cold Brew

Net weight: 12 ounces/340 grams

Info: Quietly, Vietnam has securely established itself as the world’s second-largest producer of coffee after Brazil. By the nature of such expanse, much of that coffee is low grade and ends up in instant coffee or packaged coffee “product”, leading many fresh or specialty consumers to not consider how significant a player Vietnam is on the world coffee market.

Coffee was introduced into Vietnam in 1857 by a French Catholic priest in the form of a single Coffea Arabica tree. Vietnam did not become a major exporter of coffee until the Đổi Mới reforms and opening of the economy after the war. Now, many coffee farms exist across the central highlands and beyond.

This offering comes to us by way of a roasting company in Ho Chi Minh City that had a vision to diversify their offer by exploring alternative species under the Coffea umbrella. In this case, they have been working with the Liberica species of coffee, a cousin to the more commercially-known Arabica and Robusta species, with a small group of farmers in the Quang Tri province. Also a native plant to the African continent, albeit the lower altitude western side, this plant is unmistakably a member of the Coffea genus while still exhibiting some distinct defining characteristics. To the farmer, this plant is sturdier and grows at a much lower altitude than Arabica, a bulwark crop option against encroaching climate change. To the drinker, this bean offers some unique complexity, in part thanks to the labor-intensive post-harvest processing, drinking like a Red Berry reduction blended with Crème de Cacao, topped off by a long-lingering Stevia-like sweetness.

Part of our mission at Eastlick Coffee is to continue to push the boundaries on what “counts” as coffee, who can grow it and how it can taste. This offer accomplishes that and more. We secured one single bag, so it will move quickly! Enjoy this unique experience while you can!
