Washed Colombian coffee is basically a menu staple for the vast majority of North American roasteries, shaping the taste and expectations of hundreds of millions of coffee drinkers over the course of decades.
While somewhat ubiquitous, it’s important for the team here at Eastlick to not only offer a crowd-pleaser, but to find one that fit’s the bill of both appealing and uniquely attractive. Enter: Catatumbo Cooperative. This is another coffee brought to us by our friends at Yellow Rooster Coffee Imports, who have gone the extra mile to find a coffee that checks off a lot of boxes. Approachable? Consistent? Differentiated? Impactful? Check x 4.
The Catatumbo Coffee Growers’ Cooperative is a cooperative in the department of Norte de Santander boasting 2400 member producers that produce about half of the region’s coffee at an average of 30 million pounds each year. The Cooperative provides members various advantages, including purchase of coffee at price premiums to the market, low-interest credit for farm investments, discounted agricultural raw materials such as fertilizers, as well as offering educational programs and activities, which are available not only to members, but to their families and the broader community.
For a region in Colombia that has been in the news for all the wrong reasons these past few years (instability on the border with nearby Venezuela, illicit crops, violence), it’s our honor to participate in sharing this cup with our audience.
